Dubai to break record for world’s most expensive truffle
When it comes to truffles, all of us here on ShortList have mixed emotions. On the one hand, we enjoy the tuber and all the things that it brings to the table. On the other, it’s very much over used – it seems like almost every dish in the city either uses truffle oil, or has something infused with it.
Regardless, we were quite interested when we found out that Dubai is all set to break the record for the world’s most expensive truffle – nothing like another record to add to the city’s already impressive resume (if you’re wondering, it holds the record for tallest building – the Burj Khalifa – fastest police car in the world – the Bugatti Veyron and much, much more).
The record-breaking attempt will take place at the annual World Alba White Truffle Auction (the first event of its kind in the GCC) on Sunday, November 12 at Le Méridien Dubai Hotel and Conference Centre as part of the Italian Festival Week.
The rundown is quite simple, five truffles will be sold off during the auction. One of which, will be a signature truffle that stems from of Alba, Italy. Should someone buy it, they will be in possession of the world’s most expensive truffle – the exact price of the starting bid is not yet known but we can only imagine it won’t be less than AED15,000 (during an auction last year, a 1,170 gram truffle sold for US$118,000).
For all those rolling their eyes (Hi Susan, *waves*), it’s important to note that all proceeds go to the Al Jalila Foundation, a non-profit organisation established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which focuses on medical research for the advancement of science.
The winning bidder will not only walk away with the honour of owning the most expensive truffle on the planet, they will also be offered an exclusive dining experience for eight, where they will be served the truffle by chefs Reif Othman and Gary Rhodes – not bad.
