4 places in Dubai to satisfy your need for speed
There are occasions when Dubai’s roads feel like a public racetrack. Multi-laned, flat as a pancake and boasting pristine surfaces, there isn’t a driver alive who hasn’t felt the desire to squeeze the accelerator pedal a little too close to the floor. Indeed, there probably aren’t too many drivers who haven’t received an SMS from the Road and Transport Authority to inform them the exact penalty for yielding to temptation.
It is, then, a good idea to satisfy your cravings in entirely legal fashion. Like visiting one of these:
Where: Al Wasl Sports Club
How fast? 65kmh (standard go-kart)
How much? AED180 for 30 minutes
Emirates Kartzone is one of the newer “arrive and drive” karting facilities in the UAE. They offer the 390cc RX-7 karts, which can fly around the winding circuit at speeds touching 65kmh, providing plenty of opportunities to believe you were one lucky break away from the starting grid in Monaco. Racing Suits, helmets, head socks, and instruction for first time racers are all provided, as is a computer print off of your time. There are also attractive rates for groups and birthdays, and the zone also boasts both an indoor and outdoor track to suit your preference.
Where: Jumeirah Beach Road
How fast? 80kmh
How much? AED275 for general admission
If you thought the Jumeirah Scarer was a little too much, you need to go back and try the updated version. Feel your confidence waiver as you climb the steps and reach a ride that resembles a coffin just a little too much to be funny. Reaching speeds of up to 80kmh, the new Jumeirah Scarer is by far the best water park ride in the city, and requires a head for heights and the lightest of lunches. Not for you? There’s always the lazy river.
Where: Mall of the Emirates
How fast? Up to 50kmh
How much? AED200 for a two-hour pass
One of Dubai’s main attractions, Ski Dubai is of course the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East and since it opened in 2005 has been offering residents and tourists one of the most unique experiences in the region. Although it’s doubtful you’ll approach the skiing world record speed of 252.4kmh, there are still plenty of opportunities in the 22,500 square-metre attraction to pick up some genuine pace – whether you’re on skis or a snowboard. The Snow Park also has a toboggan run.
Motor City Autodrome
Where: Motor City
How fast? 230kmh
How much? AED875
Who hasn’t at one time fancied themselves as the next F1 superstar? The Single Seater Experience is one of the many offerings at the Motor City track, which also features an Audi TT and R8 experience, and is certainly the one for the most foolhardy out there. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 230kmh, there is finally no need to make your own sound effects as every ounce of concentration you have focuses on survival. Still, it’s great fun.
