Bet your bottom dollar: Annie hits Dubai

Published

on

There are few musicals to have been a more consistent part of our cultural landscape than Annie, the tale of a red-headed orphan with big hopes for “tomorrow”. On the back of the Hollywood remake with Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, Madinat Jumeirah hosts the stage show, which is being put together by the same producers behind The Wizard of Oz, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the award winning The Sound of Music.

Annie is a boisterous but sad 11-year-old in depression-era New York City. She escapes the clutches of her orphanage to be rescued by billionaire Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks. In its previous run in Dubai, back in 2009, it was a complete sell out.

The 2015 production will see Jordan Watton and Nairne Hannah take turns in the title role. David Streames will play Oliver.

Facts about Annie:

  • The original musical was first staged in New York City in 1977. The title role was played by Andrea McArdle.
  • It was inspired by a 1924 comic strip called Little Orphan Annie.
  • It was made into a film in 1982, with Aileen Quinn in the lead role and British veteran Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks.
  • The 2014 remake was co-produced by Jay-Z, who’d sampled “It’s The Hard Knock Life” in 2002.

Annie will run from April 2 to April 17.
