Strip away the commercialisation and the inherent cultural elitism and art, at the level on which most people appreciate it, is decoration. It is a means of enhancing a space with a collision of colour and shapes that meant something to you when you first saw it – and is something that you wanted to look at again and again. The rest is, well, marketing.

As such, a piece of art bought a few years ago might not resonate in the way it once did. It might no longer fit a space in your home. You might have pieces in bubble wrap that you still haven’t got around to hanging. Now, there’s a way you can trade it in.

Popular restaurant Iris, located in the Oberoi Hotel, is hosting the first ever Part with Your Art event in which you can sell a work of art that you own while also having the chance to purchase a new piece from someone else.

“Iris Dubai will be transformed into an open art market that will focus on acquiring and selling pieces of art while also creating a space for socialising and embracing the art world,” said Karim Jaber, Iris’ founder and managing partner.

How to sell your art

You can register on the site www.irisdubai.com/art and submit your piece and any necessary details. Someone from Iris Dubai will contact you to discuss availability and the procedures of the event. Submission ends on April 11.

The event will take place between April 18-22 at Iris Dubai, Oberoi Hotel.
