Tennis superstar, grand slam champion and former world number one Rafael Nadal has been confirmed for the eighth Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. The Spaniard will play alongside the likes of newcomer Milos Roanic, a previous Washington Open winner from Canada. The pros are swinging into the capital for the tournament in Zayed Sports City from December 31 to January 2.

The event brings together six of the world’s top players to battle it out for $250,000 (AED918,000), while UAE tennis enthusiasts will be treated to the ultimate New Year. Nadal, who is no stranger to the UAE, said he’s excited to see his Abu Dhabi fans. “The interaction between the fans and the players is a great selling point for the tournament. I remember being a young player and getting to meet players who I’d watched play on TV and it was a great feeling. Having a bit of time and opportunity to have a hit with local young players is a really positive thing so I look forward to that.”

Tournament newcomer Milos Raonic will go head-to-head with Nadal. Building towards the Australian Open, the MWTC will be a good benchmark for his season ahead. “The lineup for the Mubadala World Tennis Championship is always extremely strong and I’ve heard nothing but good things from the guys on the tour who have been there before,” he said. “For me it will be my first time in Abu Dhabi so it’s going to be a new experience and I’ll be on the lookout for the Canadian flags in the stands for support.”

Tickets will go on sale at 12pm on Monday September 28 at www.ticketmaster.ae and Virgin Megastores.
