6 things to do in Dubai this week

Published

on

Everywhere is gearing up for Christmas, so make some time to watch your favourite festive films. JLT’s outdoor cinema is well worth checking out, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the flick of choice this Saturday. Earlier on in the week there’s plenty to see at Dubai international Film Festival, as the fantastic event draws to a close (finishing with a performance by Shaggy of all people).

Dubai Film Festival
The 2015 edition of DIFF is in full swing, with Room taking the prime spot at the Gala Opening party. The film is an adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel of the same name. Following the original story closely, it’s told from the point of view of five-year-old Jack, who has been locked in a room with his mother for his whole life. The harrowing tale of their escape is one of our top picks at this year’s festival. Visit here for a round-up of our other favourites.
When: Until December 16
Where: Madinat Jumeirah and various cinemas across Dubai.

Noir SHE Ladies Night
This 1920s style cocktail bar in Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates serves up three free drinks for the ladies on every Wednesday. While you’re there, the menu is well worth a try, with dishes incorporating fusion food from Latin America and Asia.
When: Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm
Where: Noir, Kempinski Mall of the Emirates

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
There’s probably no more appropriate way to sign off the year’s public cinema screenings than with the Dr Seuss festive classic. Gather the family on the grass between Clusters O and P in JLT and watch Jim Carrey star in the suitably madcap live action movie.
When: December 19
Where: JLT Park, Cluster O

Cinema – Zinzana
Talal has just woken up in a police cell, with no memory of what’s happened to him or how he got there. A deeply unsettling situation to find oneself at any time, but one that’s made infinitely worse with the arrival of Al Daban, a psychopath (and Freddie Mercury lookalike) who is posing as a member of law enforcement. What then ensues is a number of chilling, cat and mouse mindgames, as the tortured Talal must mentally out-manoeuvre his tormenter on the other side of the bars to keep his family alive.

Manu Gonzalez at Movida Dubai
Born and bred on The White Isle, Manu Gonzalez is a name known to all Ibiza partygoers. He was even voted best DJ on the island by Pacha this summer. His electronic sounds, which blend a bit of funk, hip hop and jazz, will fill up Movida Dubai on Thursday night, as Gonzalez keeps the party going until the early hours.
When: Thursday December 17
Where: Movida Dubai,

Dubai Winter Festival
As we mentioned in the last issue, there are a stack of Winter Festivals going on in the UAE this season, but this is the biggest of them all. Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, this festive mega-carnival includes Christmas carol singers, a massive market, a pantomime, an ice-skating rink, a huge Christmas tree, at least one visit from Santa, a huge funfair and even
a snowball fight zone. There’s also a load of live entertainment and general fun that will whip everyone up into the kind of frenzy that only a mountain of presents on December 25 will cure. You have been warned.
When: December 17-19
Where: Dubai World Trade Centre,
