8 things to do in Dubai this weekend

Published

on

The weekend has come a day early, which means you have plenty time to pack in the action. Things kick off on Thursday with two big parties to choose from – Walshy Fire from Major Lazer is at Pacha Ibiza Dubai while Martin Solveig brings his trademark sound to Zero Gravity. One of our top recommendations is the Wurscht Fest at Der Keller, serving up 11 different varieties of sausage until May 7. There’s also a cool craft workshop and plenty of films at the cinema.

Walshy Fire DJ set
Major Lazer, the dancehall and trap-inspired dance act, are a big deal. The trio originally formed by Diplo and Switch in Los Angeles in 2008, have racked up some pretty killer numbers in the years they’ve been active – especially with the new line-up of Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. Take their song “Lean On”. It is, according to Spotify, the most streamed song of all time. In total, the song now has more than a billion views on YouTube – more than 1.3 billion to be precise.
It’s a genre that one of their members, Miami-born Jamaican Walshy Fire – younger brother of Courtney Walsh, cricket fans – will be bringing to Pacha Ibiza Dubai this weekend with a DJ set.

Martin Solveig
Martin started his career as an underground house music DJ and producer but these days he’s regularly in the charts. Check him out with his latest piece of musical magic, “Plus One” featuring Sam White. This man never stands still, don’t miss out. Sonny Fodera plays 24 hours later as well.

Wurscht Fest
Sausages are the order of the week at this German diner. Until May 7, they’ll be offering small plates of up to 11 different varieties – which, for local palates, includes lamb merguez sausages, beef chorizo and Truthan Bratwurst, which is made from spiced chicken meat. AED110 for three portions, two sides and two sauces or condiments. Wunderbar!

Carl Cox and Art Department
Radio host, founder of Intec Digital and veteran of the house music scene, DJ Carl Cox is back in Dubai to demonstrate exactly how it is done on the decks – bringing his 25-plus years of experience to the Blue Marlin stage for one of the last big parties of the season. Joining him on the bill is Canada’s own Jonny White AKA Art Department, who’ll be mixing a set that will no doubt include his 2014 runaway hit “Catch You By Surprise” and 2013’s “Robot Heart”. The ideal segue into the summer.

Groove on the Grass
Groove on the Grass has become one of the most popular and successful recurring dance events in the UAE. Closing things out for Season IV, their last party before the summer hiatus is as big as you would expect for the brand. DJ Tennis and Berlin’s The/Das will hit the decks on the arena stage before internationally renowned DJs Adam Beyer and Bart Skils take on Emirates Golf Club’s main stage. With over 10 hours of back-to-back music over the two stages, this event will prove just how much it will be missed until it restarts again some time in the autumn. Best make the most of the last weekend on the fairways, then. Tickets between AED180 and AED240.

Cinema – Captain America: Civil War (15)
Brands, franchises, products… it’s where we are in Hollywood right now. This week, Captain America and Iron Man enter a ring recently vacated by Superman and Batman, although Marvel’s superhero duel is lighter, funnier and generally more self-aware its DC rival. Here, we see the whole Avengers crew split into two camps and an ensemble cast – Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd – join Evans and Downey Jr in major CGI mayhem.
In cinemas from May 5
