Derry Girls fans can now enjoy the final episode of Season 3 without further delay. Derry Girls’ final season will be available on Netflix outside of the UK and Ireland on October 7th, according to Netflix. The OTT platform made it official via a Twitter post on 31st August. This summer, the third and final season of Derry Girls was wrapped up on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.

A British teen sitcom, Derry Girls is created and written by Lisa Mcgee. Directed by Michael Lennox, the comedy series became an instant hit among the audience. The first series was aired on 4th January 2018 on Channel 4.

After Father Ted, Derry Girls became the most successful comedy on the channel. In 2018, the show bagged the Radio Times Comedy Champion Award and the IFTA Gala Television Awards for Best Comedy. Towards the end of 2018, Netflix acquired the international rights exclusively for the show. To add on, the show is hosted under the Netflix Original umbrella.

After the first episode was broadcast, Derry Girls was renewed within a short period. Season 2 of the series was aired in March and April 2019. Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a delay in the filming of the third and last seasons. Finally, Season 3 premiered in April 2022. As per the remarks by Lisa McGee, the original plan was to bid goodbye after three series. However, she went on to add that the characters of the series might make a comeback in some other guise someday.

The Plot

The story of the series is based on creator Lisa Mcgee’s personal experiences during her formative years in the 1990s. She grew up in Derry, Northern Island when ‘The Troubles’ were in its final stages. An ethnonational conflict that took place in Northern Ireland, The Troubles lasted for around 30 years starting from the late 1960s till 1998.

With Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, and Dylan Llewellyn appearing in the lead roles, Derry Girls portrays the story of five teenagers who lived in the mid-1990s. The main characters in the series are Erin Quinn, Orla (Erin’s cousin), and their friends Clare, Michelle, and James (Michelle’s English cousin). All these friends are shown attending the Catholic girls’ secondary school which is based on Thornhill College, where creator Mcgee studied. The story unfolds how these characters frequently encounter absurd situations during the political unrest and cultural divide that occurred during ‘The Troubles.   

When Will Season 3 Be Released On Netflix UK?

The Derry Girls fans in the UK have to wait for some more time. Now it is official that NetFlix UK will be the last to receive Season 3 of Derry Girls. However, to date, no confirmation has come regarding the exact release date. In July 2020, Season 2 was temporarily added to Netflix UK. However, within a few days, it was removed from the platform.
