Passengers (18)
Leaving planet Earth for good seems to be a theme in Hollywood recently. Are things really that bad down here? Well, the likes of Elysium and Interstellar suggest that, in the near future, they might be. In Passengers, Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) are also on the hunt for a new galaxy to call home, only for their hibernation pods to spring open around 90 years too soon. Lost in oblivion, they then fall for each other… but where will they go on their first date?
In cinemas from December 22

Gold (18)
Matthew McConaughey doing what Matthew McConaughey does best: a slightly exaggerated version of a real person, with ticks and hairpieces and bad teeth and a penchant for coursing through three different emotions – none of them involving self-reflection – in every scene. In Gold, he plays Kenny Wells, a down-on-his luck prospector in early-90s Reno who stumbles across a lot of gold in the jungles of Indonesia. Jackpot? Not as far as the FBI and the Indonesian military are concerned.
In cinemas from December 22

Office Christmas Party (18)
A seasonal watch-and-forget release that is as telegraphed and clunky as you think it’s going to be – but somehow made watchable by the comedic talents of Jason Bateman, TJ Miller and a take-it-to-the-bank Jennifer Aniston. The plot, such that it is, involves Aniston’s tech CEO trying to rein in her partying brother (Miller), whose branch then throws a huge Christmas bash to try and get everything back on track. The trailer isn't quite PG enough, so here's a clip from the movie.
In cinemas from December 22
