The Darkest Minds

Marl Wahlberg's latest flick Mile 22 has arrived as has fantasy thriller The Darkest Minds and fantasy mystery The House with a Clock in Its Walls.

Mile 22

If there’s one thing that Hollywood loves to make movies about, it’s the last line of defence. The spec-ops crews that nobody knows about but are definitely out there cracking skulls and escorting high-value targets out of terrifying situations. Enter Mile 22 the latest flick to re-imagine these covert teams as video game style superheroes.

It follows James Silva (Mark Wahlberg, All the Money in the World) an elite CIA agent. He’s been sent to rescue Li Noor (Iko Uwais, The Raid) who just so happens to have key information on a terrorist attack being planned on US soil. Along with a ragtag of off-the-grid operatives that, amongst others, includes ex-UFC champion and current WWE star, Ronda Rousey, they must take Li through 22 miles of hostile territory to the extraction point.

Obviously, this won’t do for the people who would rather he didn’t leave with all that incriminating evidence, so cue dramatic car chases, explosions, close quarter fisticuffs, explosions, and finally, more explosions. Think Expendables, less the rampant testosterone.

What’s most interesting is that the studio behind Mile 22 see it as the start of a multi-media franchise. And, rather presumptuously, a sequel is already being developed before this one has even made it into cinemas. Still, there’s always space in the cinemas for a bombastic movie that allows you to check your brain at the door, and thankfully Mile 22 plays out just like this.
