Cinema Akil is having an extremely quirky Cat Weekend

Does your furry feline friend randomly pester you for attention but as soon as you oblige, they sprint in the other direction? Yes, they’re a (lovable) enigma, but maybe this special weekend at Cinema Akil can help us understand them.

The popular independent cinema in Alserkal Avenue is celebrating all things fluffiness and adorable paws with its ‘CATVIDEOFEST’ weekend. So, if you like cats, this one is for you.

Taking place from Friday August 9 until Saturday August 10, it kicks off with an adorable compilation reel of the best cat videos, from unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and, of course, classic internet powerhouses.

Cinema Akil has also gathered four of the best feline-related movies for the weekend, including hit 2016 documentary Kedi, that tells the story Istanbul's relationship with cats who have wondered freely around the city for thousands of years.

There’s also the animated A Cat in Paris, about Zoe, a little girl living in the French capital who gets involved with a group of gangsters. It’s up to her cat Dino to come to her rescue.

It wouldn’t be a cat celebration without Studio Ghibli’s The Cat Returns, the second Ghibli film to be directed by someone other than Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata.

Finally, there’s the heartfelt and hilarious Japanese drama Rent-A-Cat, about a single woman who runs a rent-a-cat service to provide companions for lonely people. We can sense the tears already.

Fan of a roar rather than a meow? The Lion King is out in cinemas, and we’ve got our thoughts on it before you check it out right here.

What a purr-fect weekend for film fans.
