Trailer: Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
You would probably have to have chunks of ice floating down your veins to remain unmoved by the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, an unapologetically romanticised depiction of India as seen through the eyes of various Brits in late middle-age. What it lacked in authenticity, it made up for in warmth, charisma and plenty of comedy – and not too much of it at the expense of its host country, despite the slightly grating incompetence of Dev Patel’s would-be hotel owner Sonny Kapoor.
Frankly, it would be hard to combine the talents of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Celia Imre and Bill Nighy and not produce something eminently watchable, and thankfully they have all returned for the sequel, which is released in Dubai on March 19.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel centres on the hotel's expansion plans, the arrival of an American guest in the form of Richard Gere and the marriage of Sonny and the perennially eye-catching Sunaina, played by Tina Desai.
While the first was taken from the novel by Deborah Moggach, the follow-up is entirely the creation of screenwriter Ol Parker. The result isn’t as punchy or dryly observed as the first one, as sequels rarely are, but there’s enough technicolour on display to ensure it a second visit to Jaipur is rewarded.
Here's the trailer for you to get a sense of the sequel.
