Star Trek to be filmed in Dubai
Sci-fi fans around the UAE rejoice – it has been confirmed that Star Trek 3 will be filmed in Dubai. Although this news was announced last month, Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC) have just given it the official stamp with word that filming is scheduled to begin in October.
The film, which will be called Star Trek Beyond, is the 13th movie of its kind, however, since the new cast and director took control of the (space)ship in 2009, this is the third release. Directed by Justin Lin, and starring Karl Urban and Zachary Quinto, it’s expected to hit the box office in July next year.
Dubai will play host to various location shoots, while Dubai Studio City is expected to provide technical support. Vancouver has also been announced as a location.
Jamal Al Sharif, chairman of Dubai Film and TV Commission and managing director of Dubai Studio City said: “We are delighted that Dubai has been selected for the filming of this international blockbuster production, particularly to mark their 50th anniversary, and we look forward to welcoming the Star Trek team. Not only will this shine the spotlight on Dubai and the UAE’s excellent locations, infrastructure and flexibility, but it will significantly boost the UAE’s economy, tourism and entertainment sectors.”
