The Revenant

Name: The Revenant

Release Date: December 2015

Dramatis Personae: Hollywood heavyweight Leonardo Di Caprio is joined by Tom Hardy and Will Poulter playing a group of 19th century hunters.

True story? Apparently so. It’s based on a 2003 book by Michael Punke, which was inspired by the story of Hugh Glass – played here by Di Caprio.

As Birdman director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, is behind this lens, can we expect something intense? The film is definitely not light-hearted. It begins with Di Caprio being mauled by a bear out in the wilderness. Unable or unwilling to save him, Poulter and Hardy instead rob him and leave him for dead. Spoiler alert: Leo survives and, naturally, embarks on revenge.

Bears, snow, guns, beards… we love it already. There’s plenty of authenticity, too. The film is being filmed pretty much in the middle of the Canadian outback, where daylight hours are minimal, so the shooting was done in tiny segments. The harsh weather meant it took place over a span of nine months.

So what should we be excited about? Alejandro Iñárritu’s Birdman was a multiple-award winner, and you expect that he wants to maintain that level of quality, which is why he’s powering through despite admitting in an interview that he may have overstretched himself.

In a nutshell: Leo’s praying for an Oscar
