The Lego Ninjago Movie
There’s no way on earth this won’t be one of the biggest, most popular films of the year – and a certified franchise-creating, merchandise-shifting mega-bucks success story. It simply has too many of the ingredients that define such things: with its quip-trading team of six crack ninjas, a fleet of Paw Patrol-style customised vehicles and a back-story of high-school teens in the city of Ninjago, it has branded-pyjama-style obsession writ large across it. If they’re not already making a second, someone should lose their job.
Based on a real toy range already in production, the Ninjago adventure sees young Lloyd (voiced by Dave Franco) and his five friends secretly studying the ways of ninja craft under the tutelage of the wise and wise-cracking Master Wu (Jackie Chan). Their job is to confront evil warlord Garmadon AKA The Worst Guy Ever AKA Lloyd’s dad – and by doing so, come together as a team and unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu.
Like the previous Lego movie successes, the action here is relentless, with an almost ceaseless assault of technicolour block-shredding. But with very sharp writing from a team including Paul Fisher, Bob Logan and Hilary Winston, it’s also got plenty of multi-levelled, reference-packed humour that will appeal across the generations.
It’s great. You’ll love it. And you’ll love the next one, too. In fact, if Lego decided to remake 47 Ronin, you’d love that as well. They’re really good at this stuff.
In cinemas from September 21

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Buzzy Brit-flick starring Taron Egerton as a Bond-like secret agent who teams up with a shadowy US organisation when The Kingsman HQ is destroyed. We can't show the full trailer here due to the rating.

Victoria and Abdul
Judi Dench does the Judi Dench thing as Queen Victoria in this well-intentioned but flawed tale of her friendship with a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.

Lucknow Central
Farhan Akhtar stars as a young man in an Uttar Pradesh jail awaiting trial for murder, whose looming date with destiny is offset by his role in a prison band.
