Signature facial at Jiva Spa
Jiva Spa in Taj Dubai has that brand new smell – probably because it is. The hotel on Burj Khalifa Boulevard is the second Taj hotel to open in the city, and at just three months old it still has that fresh-from-the-box gloss. We walked into the beautifully decorated, if a little quiet, health club to be greeted with a warm cup of lemon tea and a twinkling after-dark view of downtown Dubai.
Although the interior is minimalist, it’s a welcome change from many of the whiter than white spa brands housed in five-star hotels. Orange-tinged wood, South Asian murals, low lighting and music so quiet you can barely notice it, all work together to create a comforting feel. But it’s the small touches that make this place stand out – the lockers contain delicate trinket boxes to keep your jewellery, and the robes are covered in an intricate design.
Our therapist, like everyone who works in Jiva spa, was Indian, and fully trained in the art of Indian massage. Our 90-minute facial started with a 30-minute back massage to make sure we were completely calm. She expertly pressed her fingers over pressure points in our back, almost tapping some sort of Morse code that put us straight to sleep.
The facial itself was a combination of calming and effective, just as we like it. After a deep cleanse and polish, we were left under a steam to draw out all of our imperfections. Then for the worst bit – the extraction. Although the therapist squeezed at the clogged pores around our nose, the thorough steam session made it a lot less uncomfortable than usual. We finished with a face mask and foot massage to put us back into Zen mode.
We’re massive spa-goers here at ShortList, and we can pay Jiva the highest compliment – we’ll be going back.
We tried: The 90-minute signature facial.
We’d come back for: The highly trained therapists are the highlight of this place, and we can’t recommend them enough.
