Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous Named UAE’s Official Candidate For WMO Presidency

The Director General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous has been named as the UAE’s official candidate for the presidency of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) by The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC). He is currently serving as the President of WMO Regional Association II (Asia).

Dr. Al Mandous has over 30 years of experience in Meteorology and climate science. His expertise in the field is myriad. He is well aware of the global weather and climate conditions as he has received a certificate of appreciation for his contribution to the UAE Rain Enhancement project from the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

What does His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous have to say?

In wake of the announcement, Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous said that the official announcement regarding the support of his WMO presidency reminds him of the importance the country attaches to Meteorology, Weather Climate, and environmental issues. He said that “It is a top priority for the UAE to ensure that it pools its expertise and human capital with other National and Global Organizations to accelerate the development of comprehensive early warning systems to protect lives from the impacts of natural disasters”.

He concluded that “In supporting WMO in its efforts to lead the development of high-tech, cutting-edge meteorological technologies, the UAE seeks to ensure accurate and reliable climate-related data that could assist in understanding the condition of the climate better which will benefit the communities across the globe.

As the official representative from the UAE, Dr. Al Mandous’ objectives seek to guarantee that “every person on Earth is protected by Early Warning Systems in the next five years”.

His five pillars that focus on better lives for the future are, Supporting the role of Regional Association’s Presidents and Permanent Representatives, making ‘Early warnings for all’, advanced technology such as High-Resolution Climate Computing Research, recognizing WMO by the Global Society, and taking steps in water security and Renewable energy research.

All of these steps are crucial for basic life as the entire world is focusing on transitioning to a greener future, it is important to depend upon renewable sources for generating energy.

The Director of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) Shaima Mohammed Al Ali, has appreciated the UAE’s efforts, to promote Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous for WMO presidentship at a time when the world is struggling to face multiple challenges due to climate change, as well to organize the UAE’’s upcoming Presidentship of COP 28 in November 2023.

She added that his expertise in the Meteorological and climate change is promising as she finds him the ideal choice to lead WMO into a sustainable future to ensure that the organization continues to play a crucial role in the transition to a greener future as well supporting sustainable development of the nations around the world.

It is believed that his candidacy for the WMO presidency comes in line with the UAE’s efforts to consolidate its international status. It avails the UAE of a great opportunity to enhance its engagement with the international community to promote practical solutions with long-term economic benefits to nations across the world.

As the president of Regional Association II (Asia), Dr. Al Mandous has held several key meetings and sessions as well as guided activities of the association and its working groups to explore innovative ideas on how to tackle the growing climate effects.

He also presented his logical views on the challenges and priorities that need to be addressed regarding meteorological activities. He also fast-tracked the implementation of the WMO Governance Reform at ASIA.

Since 2008, under his presidency, the center has carried out a large-scale modernization of infrastructure and enhancement of technologies of the UAE’s national meteorological and seismological networks. He has widely contributed to developing the Arabian Peninsula Integrated Radar Observing System as well as established the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science, an initiative launched under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, to advance the science and technology of rain enhancement.

Additionally, he was appointed as a member of the Expert Team on Weather Modification by WMO 2021, which progressed as an international group under the World Weather Research Programme of the WMO Research Board. He also excels in issues related to weather monitoring, forecasting, water management, crisis management, and among others.
