Dubai Records 5.5% Growth In Energy Demand In 2022 Compared To 2021

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s, MD & CEO, His Highness Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer announced that DEWA witnessed a 5.5% growth in demand in 2022 compared with 2021. The energy consumption reached 53,180 gigawatt-hours in 2022, whereas the energy consumption in 2021 was 50,401 gigawatt-hours.

How much has Dubai outperformed other Global leading energy companies?

Dubai has outperformed many leading companies in Europe and America. DEWA surpassed them in several key performance indicators. DEWA achieved a record of 1.19 minutes per customer when compared with other leading utility companies in the European Union; DEWA accomplished a new world record with the given figure. ‌European companies recorded around 15 minutes of electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML).

The Chief Executive of DEWA said that the increase in demand is a result of strong performances from all the economic sectors in Dubai, including the expansion of the key activities in the Emirate.

He added that to achieve sustainable and meticulous development in Dubai in the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – DEWA aims to contribute to developing an infrastructure that is most efficient in the entire world, which additionally aligns with the vision of Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’ – that aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy over the next decade to become the most preferred global cities in the world to live, work and visit. 

He continued that, DEWA continues to increase the production of electricity and water as well as broaden its capacity and efficiency of the transmission and distribution of the power supply. The program assumes that it will help them keep pace with the growing demand for electricity and water in the coming decades for the future needs of the customers. Citing the latest statistics, DEWA increased its production to 14,517 megawatts of electricity and 490 million gallons of desalinated water per day. Al Tayer concluded his statement.

In 2022, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched 17 new substations 2022 to meet the growing demand of its industrious citizens. The new substations include fifteen 132kV that can convert 2,280 megavolt amperes (MVA) and two 400kV with a conversion rate of 4,000 MVA. These substations are located in Al Qusais Industrial Area 5 and Jebel Ali.

The newly inaugurated 132kV main transmission substations projects cost $872 million. It is owned to supply to Al Barsha South, Jebel Ali, Al Furjan, Al Merkadh, Business Bay, Al Wasl, Al Rigga, Oud Al Muteena, Wadi Al Safa, Umm Hurair, Me’aiseum, Umm Al Ramool, Al Aweer, and Gadheer Barashy.

In the wake of these freshly developed Stations, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA appreciated all the employees who contributes to the project which is enlightened by the concept and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to provide reliable and quality electricity and water by implementing smart and advanced technologies, which guarantees a continuous supply of the energy and water services. The vision aims to deliver the highest standards of electricity and water to the citizens.

According to reports, DEWA’s investments in energy-generating projects between 2021 and 2024 outlay around $2.7 billion. The energy projects include $400 kV transmission projects worth $545 million and an investment of $2.2 billion in building 132 kV transmissions.

Following the completion of the latest 17 substations, Dubai now has 334 of the 132kV transmission substations in total, while an additional 29 of them are under construction. All the substations are constructed using the latest internationally approved technology to meet its standards and, security and more importantly, safety.

Earlier in October 2022, DEWA announced that ‌‌the progress on their pumped-storage hydroelectric powerplant in Hatta reached 52.61%. The hydroelectric plant is estimated to generate a capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) with a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours. The hydropower plant is believed to last for 80 years from its commencement of operation. 

It is reported by DEWA that the project’s 72 -meter main Roller Compacted Concrete wall of the upper dam has completed its construction. Besides, the 37- meter- high Roller Compacted Concrete side wall of the project has also finished its construction. The project aims to support the requirements of its social, economic, and sustainable development needs.

The project is a part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% clean energy, as visioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This project is also a component of the initiatives and projects launched by DEWA to diversify its energy production to drive away from refineries, by using renewable and clean sources.
