The number of international passengers travelling to Dubai has grown by leaps and bounds for the last 2 years. In fact, the Dubai International Airport has been adjudged the busiest international airport in the world.

Therefore, in order to cater to the ever-increasing demand, the Dubai Government has decided to resume the expansion of the Al Maktoum International Airport.

The multi-billion construction project is likely to commence anytime soon

Despite several years of inaction and delay, the Dubai Government has decided to complete the expansion. This is likely to be a mega-project with an approximate budget of USD 33 billion. This expansion would allow the authorities to provide better amenities to travelers.

The multi-billion construction project is likely to commence anytime soon

The Government has officially notified all the partners and stakeholders about the resumption of the project. However, the official deadline for the completion of the project has not been yet notified.

The project to expand the Al Maktoum International Airport was undertaken in the year of 2018.  However, due to the paucity of funds, a slump in the capital market, and the faltering position of the economy, it became difficult to pull off the project in 2019.

The year 2020 marked the onset of the pandemic. The entire economy has been brought to a position of standstill during the two years of the pandemic.

The authorities neither had the funds nor an international demand to manage the traffic during Covid-19. Therefore, in such a situation, it was practically impossible to resume the project. Now that, international boundaries have once again opened and the demand for international travel is also rising, the Dubai Government is officially planning to complete this project.

According to the statistics, the airports in Dubai have recorded the greatest footfall of international passengers in the last quarter of 2022 after the pandemic. in fact, the number of passengers has crossed the mark of 7 billion.

The economy and the gross domestic product are also rising now. therefore, keeping all of these factors in mind, the Dubai Government has decided to disburse USD 33 billion towards the expansion of the Al Maktoum International Airport.

This expansion would enable the Dubai airports to return to their pre-pandemic capacities. According to the estimate of the Dubai International Airport, the latest wing of the Al Maktoum International Airport would alone handle 78 million passengers by the end of 2023 and 86 million passengers by the end of 2024.

The project is likely to expand and develop the Al Maktoum International Airport. There will be four additional Code F and CAT III B. In addition, there would be 2 runaways of 4.5 km. In addition, the authorities have also planned for the construction of two more terminals and four satellite concourses. This expansion would also witness the establishment of an 8-square-kilometer cargo facility. This would be accompanied by an additional 40 km of subterranean rod network. The entire expansion project has been divided into phases.

The first phase would involve the construction of only two runaways, a West terminal, an intra-terminal train network, and a Dubai metro to connect the different terminals with each other and two satellite concourses. The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2030. The second phase is likely to commence by the first quarter of 2035.
