A joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE (The International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation), The Global Chess League, revealed the full list of players for the coming edition. With the support of the Dubai Sports Council, the first season of the league will be hosted at the Dubai Chess and Cultural Club from the 21st of June to and 2nd of July 2023.
The match will be held at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club
This platform will be showcasing the reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren, the world’s top-ranked chess player and 5 times World Champion Magnus Carlsen, five-time World Champion, Viswanathan Anand, and four times women’ World Champion Hou Yifan, among many other giants of the field.
All the teams will be competing in a one-of-a-kind joint team format at GCL. Each of these teams will consist of 6 members comprising a minimum of 2 women players per team. To add more to the excitement and anticipation of the event, 5 more World Champions will be fighting for the trophy in the Global Chess League.
There will be the reigning world champion Ding Liren, 2008 Blitz Chess Champion Leinier Dominguez, 3 times Blitz Chess World Champion Alexander Grischuk, 2018 World Rapid Chess Champion Danii Dubov, and 2021 World Chess Champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen added that the Global Chess League will be one of the best unique events in over-the-board chess. He also shared his hope in GCL putting efforts to bring chess to the forefront, among the major sports as a spectacular one, and catching up with them.
This exciting chess league will also feature top female stars of the game like the Grandmaster Hou Yifan, a 4 time Women’s World Chess Champion and the second highest-rated female player of all time. Ms. Yifan is an acclaimed chess prodigy and also owns the record of being the youngest female player to ever qualify for the title of grandmaster at fourteen years old.
Hou Yifan will be accompanied by Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli, Grandmaster Nana Dzagnidze, Grandmaster Bella Khotenashvili, Grandmaster Tan Zhongyi, Grandmaster Kateryna Lagno, Grandmaster Nino Batsiashvili, Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk, Grandmaster Irina Krush, Polina Shuvalova the International Master, and European Women’s Champion in 2018 for the category of rapid chess, Elisabeth Paehtz.

Grandmaster Hou Yifan added that it is an amazing feeling to behold such passion for the game of chess and expressed her gratitude to Tech Mahindra and FIDE for the invite.
Grandmaster Liren added that the Global Chess League is a great opportunity and he knew it as soon as he heard about the championship. He also shared his thrill and excitement to participate in the event and to meet and greet the players that are coming from all across the world.
This grand chess league will be setting the benchmark for technological innovations in this sport as Tech Mahindra and FIDE will be exploring innovative ways to promote the game through interactive and technology-equipped platforms by making the most out of next-generation technologies like 5G, AI, and virtual reality among many others.
