The “Sheikha Latifa Bint Hamdan Unit for Cardiac Catheterisation Surgery” is being established at the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre in Cairo by the directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikha Latifa Bint Hamdan initiative, inspired by the charitable works of the wife of Sheikh Mohammed, aims to deliver state-of-the-art medical treatment services, cutting-edge medical technologies, and the ability to conduct as many as 9,000 catheterisation procedures each year through the use of robotic surgical procedures.

Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi successfully performed a leadless cardiac pacemaker procedure on an Emirati patient in 2022, using a newly-approved technology by the US FDA.

Due to the patient’s life-threateningly slow heart rate and multiple medical issues that could have increased the risk of complications with a conventional pacemaker, the cutting-edge technique was chosen.

SSMC, a collaboration between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and the Mayo Clinic, is one of the UAE’s largest serious and complex care hospitals. D. Mario Njeim, a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist, explained the advantages of the leadless cardiac pacemaker in this case.

The newly implanted leadless pacemaker generates electrical pulses that correct the patient’s slow heart rhythm, known as bradycardia.

This pacemaker type offers improved battery life and the ability to map and analyze the optimal implantation location before fixation.

Another unique feature allows for pairing with a second leadless device, enabling communication between different heart chambers, and the device can be removed or replaced as needed.

The procedure to implant the FDA-approved device was minimally invasive, using a tube inserted through a groin blood vessel and attached to the heart, without a surgical incision.
