President Of UAE, Angolan Counterpart Review Advancing Relations

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President of Angola His Excellency João Manuel Lourenço discussed and reviewed the prospects of advancing bilateral relations between the friendly nations and increasing cooperation among the people.

The meeting took place at the Qasr At Shati’ Palace in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, where H.H. Sheikh Mohamed welcomed the Angolan president, who’s in the capital to attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023.

The leaders affirmed their keenness to grow cooperation in various fields

The two counterparts showcased their keenness and willingness to improve the cooperation in various aspects such as trade, investments, etc. that can help the growth of the two nations.

As per a 2008 report by The Economist, oil and diamond export makes up about 60 per cent of the economy of Angola, with the country producing over 1.1 million barrels of oil in 2021 alone, thus making the nation the 4th largest oil producer in the African continent and also the 19th largest oil producer in the world.

Both presidents also reviewed the various issues that are discussed as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023 event, and also emphasized the importance of promoting dialogue as well as research to address the challenges faced in sustainable development and also to bring out innovative solutions to mitigate the same.

The 28th COP (Conference of the Parties 28) event that’s scheduled to be hosted in the UAE later this year, and how the conference can help improve internationally coordinated actions to face the challenge of climate change and sustainability was also discussed during the meeting.

The COP28 event is considered to be the most important event to happen in the UAE in 2023, according to the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The meeting between the UAE and Angolan presidents was also attended by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court; Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Advisor of Special Affairs at the Presidential Court; Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr Anwar Gargas, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy; and Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State.

The ADSW 2023 (Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week) is a global initiative taken by the UAE in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, Masdar. The ADSW 2023 iteration is the 15th year of the event and continues to drive dialogue around the issue of climate change. This year, the event will take place from 14th January 2023 until 19th January 2023 and will be held under the central theme of “United in Climate Action towards COP28”.

Angolan President João Manuel Lourenço will participate in a panel discussion on the 17th of January 2023 that will be held on the topic “Access to clean, available, and reliable energy and its role in the development of the African continent.”.

The panel will also include other African leaders including Hakainde Hichilema, President of Zambia; Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of Uganda; and Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania.

The Angolan President is invited to the event held in the UAE’s capital city of Abu Dhabi for the second time now, the first time being back in January 2019.

Below are some of the highlight events that will happen as part of the ADSW 2023.

IRENA Assembly

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), headquartered in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, UAE, will have its 13th assembly session organized on 14th January and 15th January, wherein representatives from 168 of IRENA’s member states will be present and discuss agenda related to global renewable energy, and steps to globally accelerate the transition to sustainable energy sources.

Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum

World’s top foreign policy and energy decision-makers will convene at the Atlantic Council Global Energy forum slated to happen on 14th January and 15th January as part of ADSW 2023.

The forum is happening for the 7th time now and will discuss the various current and future geo-political and market-related problems faced by the energy industry around the world, as well as develop and demonstrate new partnerships between leading nations to take upon innovations in the fields of energy trends around the world.

Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony

A key highlight event scheduled to occur on the 16th of January 2023, following the official ADSW opening ceremony, is the announcement of the Zayed Sustainability Prize winners and handing over the prizes to the respective winners.

The award, named after the founding father of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, recognizes and celebrates people who demonstrate innovative, inspiring, and impactful solutions for sustainability growth under five different categories: Energy, Health, Global High Schools, Food, and Water.

Many more events such as the “Youth 4 Sustainability Forum and Hub”, “WFES Exhibition and Forums”, Green Hydrogen Summit”, and the “Women in Sustainability Environment and Renewable Energy Forum” will happen during ADSW 2023.
