The Dubai RTA Opens Two New Bridges And A Tunnel Under The Falcon Interchange Improvement Project

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has opened two new bridges and a tunnel as a part of the Falcon Interchange Improvement Project.

This newly opened bridge and tunnel spans over 2325 meters and is located between Al Khaleej Street, Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road, and Al Ghubaiba Road. It can serve about 27,200 vehicles per hour in total. 

The Falcon Interchange Improvement Project to improve the travel time in Dubai

The main aim of this project is to reduce the traffic between Al Khaleej Street, Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road, and Al Ghubaiba Road.

The two new bridges are connected by the Infinity Bridge and the Al Shindagha Tunnel from the Northern side, and it is planned to link them with the new bridges that are under construction at the junction of Sheikh Rashid Road and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed by the RTA.

The major motive for constructing the bridges was to reduce travel time and to increase the efficiency, capacity, and traffic safety of the Al Khaleej and Al Mina Street Roads.

The Falcon Interchange Improvement Project is part of the 13-kilometer-long Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project, which spans Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Ciro Street.

With an estimated cost of AED 5.3 billion, this project is considered to be one of the major projects taken on by the RTA of Dubai under construction. This project covers the construction of about 15 junctions spanning over 13 km in total.

 The RTA officials said that, because of the massiveness of the project, it has been split up into five different phases to ensure the smooth functioning of the work being done.

This project, unlike several other developmental projects such as Deira Islands, Dubai Seafront, Dubai Maritime City, and Mina Rashid is intended to serve Deira and Bur Dubai. It was developed to assist around one million people, by helping them to save their travel time with the help of the new bridges.    

Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and the Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA said that the project was done under the directions and follow-up given by the rulers, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and the Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.

The valuable comments and guidelines given by them accelerated the completion of the Al Shindagha corridor, which enabled it to meet the demands of the urban population by keeping up with the ongoing developments.

He explained that the plan of the project consisted of the construction of two main bridges at Al Khaleej Street with a length of 1,825 meters and six lanes for both bridges with a total capacity to serve 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The measures of the two bridges are 750 meters and 1075 meters respectively, in the southern direction.

Both of these bridges are having connections to the new Infinity Bridge and the Al Shindagha Tunnel from Deira and are having improved junctions on Sheikh Rashid Road.  In addition, a 2-lane tunnel that covers over 500 meters and accommodates around 3,200 vehicles per hour has been opened for those who take a left turn from Khalid bin Al Waleed Road to Al Mina Street. 

The Road and Transport Authority of Dubai has been awarded the first contract under Phase IV of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project recently, said the Director General of RTA.

The project consisted of the construction of Sheikh Rashid Road, which was from the junction at Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street to the Falcon Interchange at Al Mina Street, covering about 4.8 meters. It also included the construction of three bridges each with a 3.1 km length and a capacity to accommodate 19,400 vehicles per hour in all the lanes.

The third bridge under the project, which was a single-lane slope bridge for the right turns from Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road to Al Khaleej Street, is under construction. It covers an area of around 250 meters and can accommodate up to 1,600 vehicles per hour.  

Apart from the construction of the bridges going on the other works that are in progress include lighting, pavements, traffic systems, rainwater drainage, irrigation systems, signalized surface junctions at Jumeirah Road, Al Mina Street, and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sanah Street, and the construction of two pedestrian bridges at  Sheikh Rashid Road and Al Mina Street. 

The Dubai RTA with the support of the government is introducing epoch-making developments to expand the nation’s road network to meet the needs of the public.

Studies show that, with the opening of the new bridges, the people of Dubai will be able to save their travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by the year 2030. Thus, the time saved by them over 20 years will be worth AED 45 billion. The officials of the RTA said that by improving the transport facilities of the nation they aim to ensure the happiness and well-being of the public.
