UAE President Emphasises Link Between Sustainable Economic Development

The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized that there is an inevitable connection between climate action and sustainable economic development. He said that this connection is vital in safeguarding better living conditions for all. 

These remarks were made at Major Economies Forum’s (MEF) virtual meeting held on Energy and Climate Change 

The meeting of the Major Economies Forum (MEF) was hosted by the US President, Joe Biden. It included heads of government and leaders from various other significant global economies. UAE was also invited to attend the meeting along with other international leaders.

UAE got an invitation to the meeting prior to the twenty-eighth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28), which is to be held in Dubai in 2023.

Sheikh Mohammed said that UAE has always given much importance to climate change that it has been considered fundamental to the policies of the nation. The nation has invested more than $150 billion in the field of climate action and is planning to put more in the coming future, he said. 

The government of the UAE plans to reduce emissions in all economic sectors by the year with an aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

UAE confirms its commitment to climate sustainability by being the first Gulf country to approve the Paris Agreement. With this initiative taken, UAE has become the first nation in the region to promise to reduce emissions in all economic sectors by 2030.

He further added that being the host of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate, COP28, the United Arab Emirates is dedicated to delivering transformative climate action. 

The presidency of the UAE in COP28 will focus on achieving a transformative climate action, moving from discussions to accomplishments and producing a comprehensive action plan for the benefit of the people and the earth, said the President.

Sheikh Mohammed further pointed out the importance of financing and international cooperation, in order to address the effects of climate change and promote the energy transition, especially in vulnerable communities and in the Global South. 

He also highlighted the urge to double the production of hydrogen and the need to increase the production capacity of renewable energy. Both climate change and energy are closely linked to each other and the world must hasten its practices to move towards a practical, logical and balanced transition in the energy sector. 

He expressed his gratitude to the world for the positive response shown towards the efforts taken by the United Arab Emirates. He said that he feels more confident in receiving such a great response and he invited everyone to join hands with the UAE. Thus, it will help to achieve remarkable developments in the field of climate action.
