The Island of Abu Dhabi witnessed a three-day Swimming Olympiad last week. Many teams from Middle East countries including Dubai participated in the program.

It was an interesting event to witness as the aim of the program was to spread awareness to the world at large to protect the marine environment. All the participants were actually volunteers who worked in unison to educate the people about protecting the marine environment from the side effects of the marine environment.

The President of Dubai was extremely rejoiced at the team for working tirelessly to promote a noble cause

His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, cordially invited the team for a meeting at Qasr Al Bahr. He was really excited to know the details of the program and hence, enquired about everything from them. In addition, he exhorted the team members to participate in such events on a regular basis.

Such participation will definitely help to strengthen the efforts of the government to protect and preserve the marine environment. The President of Dubai also acknowledged the need for such efforts aimed to educate and caution the residents.

The Abu Dhabi Olympiad was organized by the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with various non-governmental organizations. The event has been able to establish a Guinness World of Records. This event attracted the highest number of participants from various countries of the world.

The President of Dubai sponsored the event. Professional swimmers like Mansour Al Dhaheri, Vania Neves, and Arjuna Don from Dubai participated in the event and swam for a period of 34 hours non-stop in order to cover a distance of 62 km.

The team stood second in the race to reach the final destination. During the meeting with the President of Dubai, the team members revealed that they had been practicing for a period of one year, and during this time of preparation they undertook swimming across 900 kilometers. Finally, their efforts have paid them off well.

His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was impressed by the efforts of the team members to contribute towards the development of the community. Such competitions help to spread awareness about the risk to which the environment is exposed due to the ruthless activities of humans.

According to the statistics, around 45% of the water bodies in the Middle East are polluted and unfit for human consumption. In light of this increased risk, the need to undertake such measures becomes necessary. Hence, the Swimming Team 62 truly deserves a round of applause.

The President of Dubai has further decided to support such participation in huge numbers by specifically allocating funds to such teams so that they can undertake their training. Also, the Crown Prince motivated the Swimming Team 62 to indulge in more such events for the betterment of society as a whole.

Dubai is all set to host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) by the end of this year. The agenda of the conference is to promote sustainable development and also ensure the development of the environment by balancing the needs of the present and future generations.

The event was also oriented towards sharing knowledge on swimming. All the swimmers after the event shared their experiences. They also discussed the dangers of swimming in open water and shared the safety measures which must ideally be followed. This campaign helped to spread the requisite awareness to the public.

This was necessary because the number of accidents near the beaches has been constantly rising with time. Organizations like Make a Wish Foundation and Abu Dhabi Maritime Commission are also working in this direction and are sponsoring most of the government efforts in this regard.

The government of Abu Dhabi had named this event to be the biggest lesson on water safety.  The Swimming Team 62 was also awarded a certificate of recognition for their contribution to the entire event.

They not only gave an outstanding performance but also worked for the entire community by sharing with them the right lessons. The Crown Prince has assured the team of all the support they need in furtherance of this purpose.
