The Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was present at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre in Dubai on Thursday, March 2, 2023, to witness the live launch of the Zayed Ambition 2 mission. This is the Arab world’s longest space mission, and it represents a significant achievement for the UAE.

The Zayed Ambition 2 mission is led by Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, who is one of three astronauts on the mission, including two NASA astronauts. On board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, they will travel to the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission is named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father and a strong supporter of the country’s space programme. The mission also pays tribute to the United Arab Emirates Year of the 50th, which commemorates the country’s Golden Jubilee.

The SpaceX Dragon Crew-6 mission launched from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:34 UAE time on Thursday, March 2, 2023. The mission, which is carrying a team of astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), is scheduled to arrive at the station on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 10:17 a.m. UAE time.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed sent his best wishes to Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, who is currently aboard the Zayed Ambition 2 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Sultan Al Neyadi will conduct a number of scientific experiments during the mission. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed stated that the mission’s launch ushers in a new era of scientific progress for the UAE, and that the country will make significant contributions to shaping a better future for humanity.

Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Managing Director of the Dubai Future Foundation, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees and also Minister of Cabinet Affairs and; Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications; Talal Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, Vice President of MBRSC; Abdulla Al Basti, Secretary-General of The Executive Council of Dubai; and Omran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs were among those present

The mission’s Mission Specialist is Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, who is joined by three other astronauts from NASA and Roscosmos. In collaboration with NASA, ESA, CSA, JAXA, and CNES, the team will conduct 19 scientific studies covering a wide range of topics. The research will focus on cardiovascular and immune system health, back pain, epigenetics, and radiation.

Aside from scientific research, the mission’s educational outreach efforts aim to inspire and engage the next generation of scientists and explorers. The Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) is receiving funding from the MBRSC for two research projects that will involve students and researchers in developing and qualifying future generations of scientists.

The Zayed Ambition 2 Mission is part of the UAE Astronaut Programme, which is managed by MBRSC and funded by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority’s ICT Fund (TDRA). Through such initiatives, the UAE hopes to contribute to shaping a better future for humanity while also establishing itself as a global space sector leader.
