Dubai is known for doing everything bigger and better. There are more world titles in this city than you can shake a Guinness World Record book at – the Burj Khalifa alone has eight of them. Here are 11 other facts about this incredible city that you may not know…

1.       24 percent of the world’s cranes are in Dubai… With three of them visible from where we type this, that’s not surprising.

2.       Around 45 years ago, there were only 13 cars in Dubai. Would you believe that driving down Sheikh Zayed road now?

3.       Dubai has the biggest everything. Mall? Check. Aquarium? Yep. Building? We’ve got it.
4.       The Palm Jumeirah has enough sand to fill the Wembley Stadium 23 and a half times… It took 94 million cubic metres of sand to make The Palm Jumeirah, while Wembley stadium is a measley 4 million cubic metres.
5.       Only 17 percent of Dubai’s total population are Emiratis. Indians make up 50 percent…

6.       … speaking of population, it’s tripled in the past 20 years to around 2.5 million.

7.       There are 29,000 Swarovski cystals on Junsui Lounge’s ceiling in the Burj Al Arab. They’re shaped in the pattern of The Milky Way, of course.

8.       The Burj Khalifa is twice as tall as the Empire State Building. Standing at 828 metres, it’s almost half a mile high.

9.       The female shark in the Burj Al Arab has achieved four ‘virgin births’, fertilising her own egg.

10.   In 2014, Dubai welcomed 11.6 million tourists… that’s over double the population of Scotland!

11.   Just in case you thought Dubai was slacking, its building an indoor air-conditioned “city” that’s going to be 4.5 square kilometres.
