6 superb Dubai steak restaurants

Published

Whether you like yours black-and-blue (basically raw) or well-done to the point where you might as well be chewing a bicycle saddle, there aren’t many better meals than a hearty slab of steak. Dubai has adopted the American-style steakhouse with a devotion that no other restaurant type can match, and we’ve eaten our way through most of them. Here are a half-dozen to try that will captivate your tastebuds, but won’t leave you eating value noodles for the rest of the month.

The Butcher Shop & Grill
Where: JBR
Looking for no-nonsense chefs who’ll take pride in serving up the choicest cuts, with minimal frills? The Butcher Shop & Grill have you covered. It might not be where you’d take your loved one for an anniversary spectacular, but there’s no arguing with the quality of food. It’s got the added bonus of being an actual butcher’s shop too, so you can take some cuts home to cook yourself.

Nezesaussi Grill
Where: Al Manzil, Downtown
Relaxed and informal, this laidback eatery is a haven for New Zealanders, South Africans and Australians – the clue is in the name. You’ll usually find sports games beamed onto the flatscreens mounted on the walls, and a wide variety of steaks in different sizes on the menu – the 1300g Tomahawk for two makes an excellent challenge for hungry friends.
Price: Ribeye from AED140

Where: The Address, Dubai Marina
Ok, so this isn’t the cheapest on the list – but in terms of value for money and the amount of customers who make a point of returning several times a month, it’s spot on. Its name isn’t as confusing as it sounds, either: in 1965, Ruth Fertel bought a small restaurant called Chris Steak House. She simply added her name to the front of it, et voila. Classy and classic, this is your “special occasion” steakhouse.
Price: Petite Filet from AED219

Where: JW Marriott, Deira
Stuffed leather armchairs, more mahogany than a South American forest and steaks that cut like butter – JW’s is a Dubai institution, and rightly so. The best part, for our money, is the golden plate with your initials inscribed, which you’ll receive when you officially become a regular. It’s a little pricey, but you get huge portions and terrific value for what you do spend.
Price: Tenderloin from AED190

West 14th New York Grill & Bar
Where: Oceana Beach Club, The Palm Dubai
Of course, the steakhouse was made famous in New York, and it’s where most modern versions take their inspiration. West 14th takes this ideal and runs with it, with dimmed red and black hues, low-key jazz music and juicy steaks, accompanied by world-class sides. In the winter, the outdoor area has stunning views of Dubai’s skyline, which complements rather than detracts from the “Noo Yoik” vibe.
Price: Striploin from AED170

Soul Restaurant & Bar
Where: Mövenpick Hotel, JBR
This doesn’t look like any other steakhouse in town. From the graffiti-style walls to the swishing chandelier light fixtures, this place says “Vibrant Funky Dining” – literally, the words are hanging from the ceiling. On the plate are simple, affordable cuts – the most expensive steak for one is a Bone-in Rib Eye, at AED315. However, it’s easy to get carried away with starters like foie gras and confit terrine.
