6 things to do in Dubai this weekend

Halloween is almost upon is, which means that Dubai’s clubs and brunches get a ghostly makeover. If you’re not up for a party, you can get in the Halloween spirit (get it?) with the new Paranormal Activity movie, which promises plenty of jumps. Those looking for something a little less freaky can enjoy DJs at Sensation, an evening of throwbacks with Take That, or catch Craig David behind the decks.

Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience
A fashion show in a mall. Does a vision of middle-of-the-road clothes, amateur models and pounding chart music spring to mind? Not here. Not when Vogue is involved. Not when Dubai is involved. The Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience is in its third year and will again be taking over part of The Dubai Mall with runways shows, lectures, talent scouting and special events. The centrepiece is, as far as the public is concerned, the Fashion Show, which will take place on October 29.

The Monster Halloween Costume Party @ Zero Gravity
For seven years now, DJ Tim Cheddar has been hosting one of the most popular Halloween nights in the city. He’s back again at Zero Gravity for The Monster Costume Party, where imaginative outfits are a must. Help is at hand for anyone struggling for inspiration, though:  the venue boasts a special effects make-up artist on site. With a AED50,000 cash prize spread across revellers – AED5,000 a piece for Scariest Male, Scariest Female, Best Group and so on – you may well end up being very grateful of their presence. Of course, the event will host a stellar music line-up, with Cheddar himself leading a charge of DJs that includes Soulninja, Jon Besant and Chris Wright – alongside an entire crew of creepy entertainers.

Cinema – Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension 3D
Shot for next to nothing but subsequently earning millions in the box office, the Paranormal Activity business model has been every filmmaker’s dream, and – in a genre that often turns out flops – has produced some genuinely terrifying movies along the way. The Ghost Dimension will be the last of the six-film franchise, continuing the trend of unnerving videotaped footage in all its jump-inducing glory – as ghostly spectres terrorise another new family.

Sensation
Catch Parisian DJ and chart-dominator Martin Solveig, along with Sander van Doorn, Quintino and Yves V at Sensation this weekend. The troupe of DJs will light up Meydan Racecourse in an ocean of white, so make sure you dress appropriately!

Take That in concert

Craig David @ XL Club
Craig David has swapped the recording studio for the DJ booth in recent years and it actually looks like the smart choice for the one-time saviour of British music. After decamping to Miami, he developed an alternative career in boutique house parties for the city’s great and good. This developed into his TS5 brand. He will be on the decks at XL Club from midnight on October 31, playing to an anticipated crowd of 4,000 people. Last year, more than 2,000 were locked out, so get the facepaint sorted, the fake bolts attached and get down there early.
