What I experienced: We all know the old saying about suffering to be beautiful. But these days there is a whole new level of suffering. We’re talking serious pain. This treatment literally burns your flesh, and you can not only feel it, but smell it, too.

There are levels of intensity to choose from, so if you’re squeamish you can go low. I went as high as possible in order to try for optimum results. A contraption was moved across my face, which peeped as she shot radio frequency rays into the skin, focusing on the areas that needed it most – in particular the fine lines underneath the eyes. It is not a pleasant experience, it has to be said, but it’s not as painful as a chemical peel and also much more effective. The bony bits on my face were particularly painful and I did have to focus on the end result to stop myself heading for the door a couple of times.

The aftermath: On the way home from the treatment, my eyes started stinging, and my skin felt like it was on fire. This, apparently, is a good sign, meaning the the lower dermis is healing. By the time I got home, though, I could barely open my eyes and I did wonder whether I had finally gone over the top. Would I be blinded by my own vanity? I called Rebecca who told me this is an unusual side effect and that it would pass. Before I went to sleep I managed a look in the mirror. I looked like the victim of a brutal mugging, with swollen bits under my eyes and red patches all over. I decided the only thing for it was to try for some beauty sleep…

The verdict: The next morning I could see, and the swelling had started to go down, but I was still in no state to go anywhere and my face still felt like it was being cooked. Over the following days though, the results started to literally shine through. It was as if my skin had been glossed with a dewy finish – it just glowed. It was luminous from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed. It’s clearly effective, but do be prepared for some downtime.
