Independence Day: Resurgence (15)
It’s 20 years since Earth was last devastated by a July 4th alien invasion and the plucky planet has managed to rebuild itself, complete with a massive new defensive apparatus. The intergalactic invaders are back, though, having received a distress signal from the vessels lost last time around. With Will Smith no longer on the job, it’s left to Liam Hemsworth – who was orphaned in the first attack – to save everyone. Expect effects galore.

It’s difficult to think of a film release that has arrived with quite as much pre-launch baggage as this all-girl reboot of 1984’s slime-a-thon. The original might weigh heavily in the first half hour here, but after that the cast of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon offers such a gear change as to render comparisons meaningless thereafter. It is, like all (director Paul) Feig-McCarthy collaborations – Bridesmaids, Spy – a riotous 90 minutes of slick gags and polished performances. So forget the past and enjoy.

You can sniff the desire for a franchise in practically every frame of the second outing for the retooled pizza-eating reptiles; its predecessor scooped more than US$500 million so don’t expect too much of a change in the world-is-in-peril formula. It’s a CGI carnival of action and adolescent humour, much of which is provided by Shredder’s bumbling sidekicks Bebop and Rocksteady, although arch-enemy Krang is the one the turtles really have to worry about.

A sort of odd cross between Swiss Family Robinson and Little Miss Sunshine, with a large dash of naive left-wing utopian politics thrown in, Captain Fantastic might be one of the more memorable comedies to emerge from Hollywood in recent years. The always excellent Viggo Mortensen is the single parent of six children who he is raising “off grid” as a rejection of America’s cancerous consumer society. However, when they travel to their mother’s funeral, the collision with the outside world is darkly hilarious.

What starts as a client-carer relationship quickly develops into something more as paraplegic Will helps Louisa learn about all the exciting things the world has to offer.
