Pizza is an important staple of any fast food lovers diet. And there's plenty of choices in Dubai to choose from. But we've come to realise, maybe it's time for a new set of contenders to top your menu. Get a pizza the action with our pizza upgrades below.

NEXT LEVEL: VEGAN CHEESE
GAME OVER: MOZZARELLA

You think pizza, you think melted mozzarella oozing from every slice. But not anymore. In 2018, the rules have changed. Slowly but surely, vegan alternatives have started popping up all over, and they’re actually delicious. With feta and paneer pizzas also sneakily making an appearance on menus, it seems traditional mozzarella cheese just isn’t the way to do it anymore.

NEXT LEVEL: CHICKEN SHAWARMA
GAME OVER: PEPPERONI

The meaty discs of goodness have long been the go-to choice for meat feast pizza fans. However, chicken – especially of the shawarma variety – is capable of lifting a slice to higher heights of tastiness. It’s the herbs and spices of the shawarma chicken that adds a new, delicious mouthfeel and creates a more filling portion of pizza. And with all that protein in chicken, it’s bound to make the pizza good for you, right? RIGHT?

NEXT LEVEL: SHRIMPS
GAME OVER: ANCHOVIES

We’re not sure who exactly is ordering pizza with anchovies anyway (but we know you’re out there) but now there’s even more reason to shun the salty sea creatures. How about shrimp instead? More and more eateries are opting for the fishy alternative, and some (like the slice pictured here) have gone full out on the seafood pizza idea – calamari and mussels included.

NEXT LEVEL: SUN-DRIED TOMATOES
GAME OVER: REGULAR TOMATOES

OK, we’re just going to put this out there, but regular tomatoes shouldn’t be mixing with fast food favourites. Burgers, sandwiches and indeed, pizzas, they just create a soggy mess. But bang a little sun-dried tomato on there and you’ve got yourself a one-way ticket to flavourville.

NEXT LEVEL: DATES
GAME OVER: PINEAPPLES

There’s always been a great debate amongst pizza fans as to whether or not pineapple, or any fruit for that matter, is welcome on a predominantly savoury feast. For all those naysayers, we say this: try it with dates and then thank us later. You’ll soon realise that fruit definitely has a place on your pizza.

NEXT LEVEL: TRUFFLES
GAME OVER: MUSHROOMS

Mushroom is no longer our favourite fungi family member. Truffles have officially taken over our pizzas in every way possible, from truffle oil-infused sauce to shavings of the rich stuff sprinkled up top. But if you can’t bear to ditch mushrooms completely for their much classier cousin, don’t worry the twosome make a killer flavour combo.

NEXT LEVEL: DESSERT PIZZA
GAME OVER: STRICTLY SAVOURY

Why let the main meals have all the fun? Dessert pizzas – like this Nutella and banana coated cut – are the newest take on the Italian speciality, and we’re totally on board with it. We’d eat almost anything that’s been covered in layers of chocolate, after all.

NEXT LEVEL: AVOCADOS
GAME OVER: BELL PEPPERS

In the last few years, the squishy green fruit has quickly become everyone’s go-to salad ingredient, toast spread and… pizza topping? Yes, avocados have officially landed on top of your doughy slice, making the age-old green pepper as outdated as a black and white film. Just remember, place your wedge amongst your toppings after you take it out of the oven when taste testing this at home.
