Double Decker's Hop On Brunch review: The British pub grub offerings is all fun and games
Double Decker, Dubai's take on a classic British pub, is an institution in itself, the sports bar offerings Blighty expats a little reminder of home.
But what's clear from heading to the Hop On Brunch, the Roda Al Murooj-based restaurant's Friday brunch offering, is that it's a fun way to spend the weekend for everyone.
And the first thing we think when we walk into this traditional pub is Scooby Doo. Not because there’s any hint of the crime-solving cartoon characters here, but because the comically enormous sandwich on display at the roast beef cart is Scooby Snack worthy. But the breadth of the bready option is just the beginning of the fun and food on offer at Double Decker’s weekend brunch.
We note the bus stop signs and London street names sprawled across the dark wood interior as we’re shown to our seats, the slightly worn leather is exactly what we’d expect from a homely venue like this.
The food display has a brighter feel to it, as the white culinary stations on wheels give off a pleasing fairground feel. After fooling ourselves at the salad bar, we make our way over to the area serving up classic British grub. Dripping roast beef is absorbed by doughy Yorkshire puddings. Fish and chips are perfectly crisp. Juicy burgers are encased in fun coloured buns for an extra quirk. Foolishly, we almost miss the outdoor offering, where we opt for jumbo shrimps fresh from the grill.
Regretfully, beloved-in-Blighty sweet treats such as sticky toffee pudding and rhubarb crumble are omitted from the desserts table, we can’t deny our sweet tooth is tantalised by the cushiony red velvet cake. It quickly wins our favour. While the dancefloor doesn’t quite erupt, a suitable amount of life is injected into the venue with a mix of club classic tunes to start, an upbeat live band for mains, and a healthy mix of fun loving games rallying the brunchers together to top it off.
Free of fanciful frills, that’s exactly what works here. Comfort foods and classic drinks served with a side of grounded good fun and games. Giant Jenga, anyone?
Silly us, in our rush to make it round all of the indoor stations we almost missed the good stuff outdoor in the garden area. An array of meaty delights gather smoke on the grills, but it’s the jumbo shrimps we single out and pile our plates with. Delicious. Head there early on, to enjoy the full majesty of it all.
