Brunch review: The Meat Co.

Brunching in the shadow of the Burj Khalifa takes some beating, especially when you’re sitting outside on the terrace of The Meat Co.. Recently refurbished, we’ve been eager to try the new meaty feast at this South African eatery.

A quick glance at the menu reveals that entrées and desserts will be sent to the table, while mains are to be picked per person from a small selection.  With two cold drinks ordered, we take in our surroundings – polished concrete décor, a layered outside terrace and chilled music creates a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a lazy Friday afternoon.

Our friendly waitress brings over chocolate and beetroot bread, a combination that sounds wrong, but turns out to be one of the best we’ve tasted. We scoff the lot. Entrées arrive in the form of beef Boerewors, salt and pepper calamari and a raw seafood platter of oysters and tuna tartare. The grilled Angus beef sausages are served with crisp polenta chips in a rich tomato sauce.

Meaty rings of squid (calamari) are coated in salt, pepper and spices, thinly battered with a light mayonnaise. Both dishes are knockout, and pair well with a fresh glass of hops.

For the mains we order the Angus prime beef fillet (a brunch-friendly 200g) and the speciality lamb skewer, both cooked medium rare. The Australian Angus is cooked perfectly, pink in the middle and terrifically tender, served with truffle fries and a choice of sauce – our peppercorn lending a fiery heat to the meat.

The lamb, however, is underwhelming.

It looks impressive served on a hanging skewer, but is far too fatty to really enjoy.

The Meat Co. brunch is a great way to try some of the popular dishes on the menu with free-flowing drinks and a great steak.

With the weather unbeatable right now, we recommend taking a seat outside. A top spot for a lively catch up with friends.

Don’t miss
It’s The Meat Co.. You go for the steak, yes, but save the smallest of room to try one of the sweets on the dessert platter. Apple and white chocolate marquise.

A white chocolate baked custard (think creamy cheesecake texture), with a Granny Smith apple compote and vanilla ice cream. All topped off with green apple caviar. Boom.
