Dinner at FIVE Palm Jumeirah pleases on more levels than one
24 Feb 2019 AT 01:33 PM

On the edge of a terrace with glass panelling, the only thing separating us from the sixteen-floor drop, the sensation of being seated within one of the Palm’s prime viewing spots isn’t lost on us. Reclined on a sofa and at ease with the chilled-out beats resonating through The Penthouse, we digest the stress-melting atmosphere for some time before considering the menu.

Overboard is the direction we take, unable to resist the large range of colourful options on the Asian menu. We order an array of astarters, sides and small plates before we get to our numerous large plates (designed for sharing, apparently...).

Some of the stand-outs among the smaller options (although each portion is generous) include the avocado pizza, which swaps out pillowy dough for crisp crackers making it a far lighter, crunchier appetiser than we expected, but in a good way. The cheese truffle gyozas make for a rich flavour combination – one that will be irresistable to both fromage and fungi fans. We also work our way through mango and vegetable maki, salmon sashimi, wagyu tacos and octopus à la plancha. Each sends our senses on a journey, but it’s the latter than holds the most favour.

When the big plates arrive, we’re ready for more. Together we taste test (read: lick the plates clean)  miso-marinated black cod, grilled wagyu sirloin steak, deep-fried tofu and braised artichokes with sides of chicken and leek skewers and grilled asparagus sticks in wafu dressing. We’re overwhelmed, but determined. While we applaud the inventive and mouth-watering veggie and vegan options, the cod served with Asian spinach and hijiki seaweed salad is the highlight of the meal, and a must-try for
seafood-lovers.

Thanks to service as incredible as the food, we leave full beans and praises for The Penthouse. Put it on your list.

Three to try
Octopus à la plancha

It’s not always easy to get these tricky tentacles right, but The Penthouse aces the seafood dish.

Miso-marinated black cod
Black cod is always a treat, and the one here is a brilliant rendition.

Chocolate fondant
As if we hadn’t consumed enough, we couldn’t resist this chocolately dish to finish up. And we suggest you do the same. After all, it’ll help you revel in those stunning views a little longer.
