Brunch review: folly by Nick & Scott

Classic, innovative cooking in a picturesque setting

As patrons of folly, which is perfectly positioned at the Madinat Jumeirah, Nick and Scott are established figures in the industry having worked under the guidance of Gordon Ramsay for many years, and their quality shines through in what is a creative, exciting menu.

Brunch dining usually takes place on the outdoor terrace, with guests able to enjoy Instagram-friendly views of the Burj Al Arab, but unfortunately on the day we visit poor weather moves proceedings inside. No matter. A passionfruit mixed drink, with a senses-awakening kick, proves to be the perfect start, and it proves difficult to resist demolishing the entire serving of sourdough, accompanied by butter which is warm and soft – the ideal combination.

The concept of the brunch, which lasts three hours, is sharing plates and the menu is varied, fresh and exciting. Monkfish cheeks with paprika and salted lemon are cooked to perfection, while the chickpea, cumin and capsicum is stunning in its simplicity.

Background music is supplied by a young female American singer armed with only a guitar and microphone, who beautifully puts her own twist on a string of well-known hits.

In what is a relaxed, family-friendly environment, each dish is expertly explained by the highly attentive and friendly waiters, for whom nothing seems too much trouble, and there is a fine selection of beverages, including hops by the bottle or on draught.
Devon crab topped with basil and sea weed is a dish nobody will enjoy sharing and a strong selection of mains includes sirloin of beef, stone bass and lamb saddle, which is accompanied by whipped pine nuts and salsa, an innovative combination of fresh flavours which encapsulate folly’s overall ambitions.

Among the hits performed by the restaurant’s singer was Genie in a Bottle and, by the time we departed, stuffed and satisfied, it felt as though we’d been granted our very own wish.

Don’t miss
Reserve enough space for the trio of desserts. Chocolate fondant, vanilla cheesecake and rhubarb and custard sound like fairly standard options for the main act dessert-wise, but when the supporting cast includes cherry cookies, milk-flavoured mousse and sweet, soft puff-pastry, you know you’ve hit the jackpot.
You’ve heard of a win-win? Well, this is a win-win-win.
