Dubai is basically the prime location for all things picnic. A spread in the desert? Sure. A lush green setting? Of course. But now the city is taking the indulgent pastime one step further – a picnic by the pool. Sounds simple, but Azure Beach’s picnic baskets are brimming with a heap of delightful bites, only made better thanks to its serene surroundings and turquoise pool to while away the day in.
Just at the back of Rixos Premium Dubai, with views of the Arabian Gulf, Azure Beach offers two picnic baskets. One is the Charcuterie Platter, a selection of cheeses, cured meats, crackers, herb butters and sundried tomatoes. Option two is the Vegetable Mezze Platter, full of pickled vegetables, cherry tomatoes, rice-stuffed vine leaves, hummus, artichoke hearts, quinoa salad and cucumber yoghurt. Both come with a crusty warm baguette, marinated olives, a colourful fruit platter and bottle of Fiji water. We like the fact you’re keeping us hydrated, Azure.
Sinking into our sunbeds, option one is chosen, we want the meat and cheese. Soft drinks and coffee are included, but there is an option to upgrade with a bottle of grape for an extra fee. It is the weekend...
Our wicker basket arrives, equipped with plates, cups, cutlery, cheese knives and a blanket, just in case you want to go old-school and sit on the lawn. The first layer is the slate board, a soft Brie, blue cheese and a smoked mozzarella make up the dairy, while thinly sliced beef and pepperoni are the meats. Served with oily sundried tomatoes, herby garlic butters, crackers, salty pretzels and a fresh warm baguette, it’s a generous portion for two. It gets better; underneath our beautiful platter is a jar of marinated olives, a bottle of ice cold water and a fresh fruit platter.
There isn’t a time limit so you can have a break from stuffing your face, order more drinks, have a little dip, all while listening to the chilled beats of the DJ and live violinist, who is walking around the venue to serenade everyone lounging around the pool.
A nice treat for the weekend and still indulgent, it’s a cute way to day date, chill by the pool with friends or catch up on that novel you promised to read this time last year.
Three to try
A creamy strong blue cheese that spreads easily on to the salty crackers and tastes amazing with a cold red grape.
Something new, this smoked cheese is good to eat without a cracker base, and goes well with a chunk of pineapple from the fruit selection.
Imagine spreading this creamy cheese on to a warm soft baguette, now step it up and spread the herbed butter on first.
