Reviewed: Luigia Friday Brunch

For a lot of us, the two reasons we head over to JBR on a Friday afternoon is for brunch and, let’s face it, brunch at a certain party spot in Rixos Premium Dubai JBR. But only a hop, skip and a jump away in the same hotel is another brunch that’s just as buzzing, although this one is definitely more for those with little ones. Yes, it’s family friendly, but it isn’t tagged as “the best of Italy” for any old reason, and that’s definitely the other reason to check it out.

We’re surprised by the crowd that have already taken their seats when we arrive, especially since Luigia is quite the sizeable Italian joint. With tables on the left for the more partying crowd and booths towards the right for families, its nicely set out for all occasions. We’re here for drinks, of course, but mainly food, so we sit in one of the comfy booths.

Despite the crowd, we’re immediately given one of Luigia’s tasty signature beverages to sip on while we have a glance at what’s in store grub-wise.  It’s a set menu here, and Luigia is right to have confidence in what it offers. We dig into the bruschetta mediterranea piled with tuna belly and plenty of fresh tomatoes, along with the chiacchiere napoletane, which is basically fried pizza balls. Yes, it sounds amazing, but there is a distinct lack of cheese. That’s okay, though, as we’re also given a classic margherita pizza, as authentic as it gets.

It really makes a difference when using 100 percent Italian grain flour for a base, and the chic restaurant naturally ferments its dough, proofed between 56 to 72 hours.

Compared to the mains, including veal with lemon sauce, a tuna steak and limited but tasty pasta with tomato sauce and salted ricotta, pizza is the winner here. We wish there were more variations of it, but all in all, we get the authentic Italian experience we’re expecting.

Don’t miss

There may be only one dessert, but it’s a fantastic one. Luigia’s tiramisù comes with a traditional Italian coffee and mascarpone dessert, and goes down well after all the dough we’ve absorbed. Be warned: it’s covered with a fine chocolate powder on top, so be sure not to inhale…Like we did. You’ll go into a fit of coughing.
