A new JBR venue which hits the spot

From the moment you step foot inside District, a bar/lounge/bistro, you get the impression you’re about to experience a night (or day) oozing with class and quality.

The venue’s launch party was only held a matter of weeks prior to our visit, so District (formerly Inner City Zoo nightclub), located at the back of the ground floor of Rixos Premium JBR, could be forgiven for being a little frayed around the edges. There’s no need to worry on that front, however, with the service impeccable from start to finish.

The interiors are slick and stylish while an outdoor terrace, although closed when we visit, affords glorious views of the Arabian Gulf and Bluewaters Dubai, perfect for when the temperature cools.

It’s Thursday and the venue, while not packed, is filling up quickly. Given the fact it’s been a long week, we dive head first into the mixed drinks, although if hops or grape are more up your street, there is a vast selection from which to choose.

Food-wise, highlights from the starters selection include lamb croquetas, which we quickly devour, and calamari with red chilli and black pepper mayonnaise. There’s a Mediterranean feel to the menu, and we’re not complaining.

Whether you prefer meat, fish or veg, every angle is covered when it comes to the mains. We go for the Canadian heritage striploin steak, served with hand-cut chips and a bearnaise sauce. Fortunately, we’re starving, because the servings are more than generous, but that doesn’t mean quality is overlooked. The steak is cooked to perfection and if you overdosed on these chips, which are thick, crispy and full of flavour, you’d struggle to move for a week.

You know when people complain about leaving a restaurant still feeling hungry? Well, there’s absolutely no chance of that happening here. As we collapse into a food coma, a soulful solo singer sparks into life on stage (live music takes place here three nights a week) and it’s just what we need. District gets it right. In every sense.

Three to try
Spicy mini chorizo

Packed full of flavour and the perfect way to start any meal. Wash it down with a mixed drink for added satisfaction.

Meatballs marinara
Delicious, juicy meatballs accompanied by crispy onions and pecorino (a hard Italian cheese). You can’t fail to enjoy these.

Chocolate brownie
Is there any way in which you can make a chocolate brownie seem even more appealing? Yep, by combining it with Snickers ice cream. Tick.
