It might be hard to believe, but there was once a time when, if you wanted decent Greek food, you didn’t have too many options.
Now, of course, it’s the complete opposite, but that in itself, while obviously a positive for diners, brings its own challenges for businesses.
With so much competition, what’s the best way of ensuring you stay one step ahead of the curve? Well, in the case of Ammos, its unique location immediately sets it apart. Based at Rixos Premium JBR, you can find Ammos situated right next to the huge pool at Azure Beach, affording guests superb views, not only internally, but looking further out too, with Bluewaters Dubai and Ain Dubai visible in the distance. The stunning setting really cannot be overstated and the only diappointment when we visit is that the shutters are pulled over due to the heat, although it won’t be long before they are back open, making for the perfect spot.
The restaurant’s interiors are typical of an authentic Greek taverna, with whitewashed walls and gentle hints of blue. You could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a Mykonos or Santorini eatery, and that’s certainly no bad thing.
Our selection of starters, including sea bass carpaccio and traditional Greek pitta with tzatziki, is lovely, the highlight of which is the flavour-packed grilled octopus.
Not surprisingly, the mains selection is dominated by meat and fish. We go for the lamb chops with bulgur, and Greek sea bass fillet. Without meaning to blow our own trumpets, they’re smart choices, but in truth, it would be difficult to get it wrong here with options such as lobster pasta, mixed meat platter and baby chicken served with hand-cut fries and a yoghurt dip. We’re spoilt for choice.
Service throughout is fantastic, with detailed explanations about ingredients and preparation given when required, and we round off our visit by tucking into a magificent mylopita (apple pie) with ice cream.
We’ll definitely be going back for seconds, just as soon as those shutters are open.
Three to try
Feta cheese is nice enough alone, but when it comes wrapped in filo pastry, covered in chilli flakes and soaked in honey, well, you catch our drift.
We all love a bowl of pasta and this one comes with prawns, mussels, scallops and calamari. Say no more.
A chocolate lava cake accompanied by fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream. A winning combo, without doubt.
