Tuesday Tapas at El Sur



Any dinner that begins with the words, “It’s a sharing concept,” fills us with dread. What if we eat too much and appear rude? Who gets the last tiger prawn? And that tiny square of hand-cut chips is just asking for trouble. You can see where we’re going with this – tapas gives us fear.

El Sur to the rescue. The slick restaurant in The Westin Mina Seyahi is the beta blocker to our social anxiety. It’s tapas with a clear format – six items each – and best of all, at AED195 including unlimited house beverages, it’s cheap.

Be warned that when they offer olives at the start of the meal, this actually counts as one of your tapas items, but if you’re anything like us you’ll have too much to eat anyway. Although the 14 item menu is relatively small (two people can almost order the whole thing), it’s perfectly put together. The likes of Russian salad with tuna and fish tiradito with coriander will please the foodies, while there are plenty plainer items like chicken skewers for fussier eaters.

We enjoyed a delicious mix, with small nibbles such as Manchego cheese, and slightly larger dishes like beef stew with tomato sauce and broken eggs with chorizo – we recommend that you order both. The potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce were a surprising highlight. A generous portion was served up in very Instagrammable grease proof newspaper, topped with a creamy dollop of sauce.

What’s more, our glass was never empty. The waiting staff weaved between tables clearing plates and filling people up. It reminded us of a very elegant Tuesday evening brunch – one for those who prefer chilled conversation in a beautiful restaurant rather than a party vibe. ShortList HQ is conveniently close to El Sur, and we have no doubt it will become one of our Tuesday regulars.

Garlic & chilli prawns
Simple but effective, this dish is all about fresh prawns and a mild spicy sauce.

Calamari a “la Romana” with alioi
Battered calamari with dipping sauce – perfectly crunchy and one of the more filling items on the menu.

Broken eggs with chorizo
This dish offers a rich flavour, with a hit of saltiness from the chorizo mixed with the creaminess of the egg yolk.
