REVIEW: J&G Steakhouse

While extravagant steak restaurants can be categorised alongside skyscrapers, supercars and “sharing concepts” as things that Dubai has in seemingly limitless supply, it hasn’t stopped their proliferation on the city’s culinary scene – all striving to perfect that red-meat recipe for success. J&G’s Steakhouse, located in Dubai’s inaugural St Regis, is no different, flaunting its champion wares alongside a noteworthy seafood selection, especially for a restaurant operating under the “steakhouse” moniker.

As opposed to the classic white tablecloth and monochrome décor found in many of the region’s upmarket steak joints, the design of J&G’s is instead a nod to a more traditional American eatery, with smart wooden furnishings, leather upholstery, intimate lighting and walls adorned with arty photographs. It’s an aesthetic that is compounded by a 1960s drinks trolley and a marble-topped bar (positioned in front of windows covered by wooden shutter blinds), giving the establishment
a modern speakeasy flourish.

On the menu, chef Jean–Georges Vongerechten has endeavoured to take a contemporary slant on classic choices. In the starter options, you’ll find the likes of scallop sashimi with garlic and black truffle toast and wagyu beef carpaccio with tarragon aioli, although our waiter also steered us towards the tuna tartare with avocado, spicy radish and ginger marinade. It actually turned out to be the highlight of this opening act so don’t be afraid to take the restaurant’s word on recommendations.

By the time you’re ready to order your main course, you will have been given a thorough education on the meat selection. There’s an Australian full blood wagyu sirloin slab and a Welsh grass-fed lamb rack. The jewel in J&G’s steak crown, however, is the Queensland AACO beef cut, available in 560-, 380- or 240-gram portions, dependant on your appetite. With more than 15 excellent steak options to choose from, across six different types of beef, we’d advise being as forthcoming as possible with the staff regarding your meat preferences, and they’ll be sure to pick one to satisfy your type.

The assortment of sides oscillate between consciously healthy options such as grilled asparagus with lemon zest or sautéed spinach, to unashamedly carb-heavy, with potato gratin, hand-cut French fries and the archetypal stateside offering, mac ’n’ cheese, topping the lot.

All that remains is to choose your sauce, and with a mixture spanning from béarnaise, mixed chilli glaze, black pepper and J&G’s own steak sauce, it’s not easy. Such is the quality of the meat, the specially-made sauces are created to accompany your steak and not drown it, so try and ensure you plump for one that doesn’t do it a disservice – the house sauce is a sound bet.

As its located in the St Regis’ flagship hotel, a meal at J&G won’t be the most economical of your dining-out experiences this year, but that’s not what it’s there for. Besides, quality comes at a cost. And from the service to the steak, the décor to the drinks, the music to the mac ’n’ cheese, J&G exists
as a beautifully polished alchemy of eating and experience.
