Lewis Hamilton joins forces with Tommy Hilfiger
Before we spare a thought for poor old Lewis Hamilton and his emphatic escape from “the slums” of poor ye olde England, we’ll reserve our sympathy for those multimillionaire bosses of his who continue to try (and miserably fail) to keep his mind on racing.
His deflated seniors at Mercedes have been unable to puncture his dreams of becoming a world-renowned fashion designer, DJ, actor and all-around Hollywood party starter. The German outfit shell out £40million-a-year (AED 200 million) for him to spearhead the team and hunt down their compatriot Michael Schumacher’s seemingly unassailable seven-title haul. However, despite being a five-time Formula 1 world champion and one of sport’s highest global earners, it’s not enough to scratch that itch of superstardom for Lew.
He wants more. And, we’re actually better off for it.
The 34-year-old has swapped those slum streets of Stevenage, UK, for “edgy” LA and linked up with Tommy Hilfiger himself to create the TommyXLewis collection – brand-new for Spring 2019. Its release coincides with the start of the Formula 1 season and Hamilton’s bid for a sixth title. He’s constantly faced criticism for his full throttle social life and losing to teammate Valtteri Bottas in Australia’s season opener didn’t do much to quell the disapproval. However, this slick new clothing range goes a long way in demonstrating Hamilton’s ability to swap the tarmac for catwalk.
The collection puts a twist on classic sportswear designs with bright pink and purple pop colours, oversized “CREATE X UNITY” graphics, dip-dyed grading and his own “LH” logo. New garb includes apparel, footwear, accessories and underwear, swimwear and socks. And, we love it.
So spare a thought for Hamilton’s superiors, because just like every other backseat driver, they don’t know best.
