Trainers/sneakers [delete as appropriate] are perhaps the most difficult clothing items to recommend to men. Unlike, say, shirts or jeans, most guys know their favourite brand and style and stick to it until they have to be surgically removed just time for their wedding... or, in some cases, funeral. Adidas (usually Originals) and Nike tend to corner the market in the loyalty, but there are some great alternatives this summer.

For some warm-weather alternatives to the big two, these kicks ought to add some personality

1. Onitsuka Tiger
If there is a more underrated and under-appreciated sneaker brand on the planet than this, then we don't know about it. Onitsuka Tigers, which these days is a permanently retro collection of the Asics brand, are flat-out classics, with a number of interesting colour ways. Like this mustard pair.
Price: AED441 from Aizone in Dubai Mall

2. Le Coq Sportif
No selection of trainers is complete without the famous French rooster. We love these visions in blue, cooler than cool and high-tops are bang on trend right now. Allez les bleus!
Price: AED430 from Level Shoe District

3. Tommy Hilfiger
Something about Tommy Hilfiger screams summer. Visions of pristine beaches full of preppie young men in even more pristine clothes. We love these Hilfiger sneakers with their subtle stripes and classic stitching
Price: AED495 from Hilfiger in Mall of the Emirates and Abu Dhabi Mall

4. Lacoste Carnaby
These are probably our favoruites. Elegant, timeless, sharp and classic. You really can’t go wrong with a pair of Lacoste trainers. They can be worn everywhere from the tennis court to the beach bar. One in every colour please…
Price: AED378

5. Saint Laurent
Difficult to find fault with a pristine white leather trainer from one of the classier brands, these minimalist low-cut tennis shoes are effortlessly cool. They will also go with absolutely anything, from shorts to your favourite jeans.
Price: AED2,299

6. Vans
In many ways, Vans Cominos are the essential summer shoe. These lightweight, smart slip-ons are ideal for the beach, the boat or the brunch table.
Price: AED205 from Namshi.com
