Get a new read at Book World
You can sit on one of the wooden stools next to a fan in this secondhand book store and lose blissful hours. The towering aisles are crammed with every genre, including a huge biography section. On our visit we spotted books by Piers Morgan, Danny Wallace, Michael Palin and Alan Sugar – all for between AED 20 and AED 30. You can trade in stuff you’ve read for something new, so there’s always something interesting that you probably won’t find anywhere else.

Buy some cheap clothes at an Ukay Ukay store
Shop assistant Hacky tells us that the name “comes from ‘hukay’, which means ‘dig’. You’ll find dresses, T-shirts, baby clothes and even cuddly toys in the dozen or so Ukay shops around Satwa. Most things are under AED 20, and you’ll find brand names from the UK and US if you rummage enough. If you’re feeling really thrifty, Wednesdays are when the prices can drop to as low as a couple of dirhams.
