Mall of the Emirates incredible expansion opens

Your inability to find a parking spot after 3pm for the last 18 months will all have been worth it.

This is very exciting. More parking spaces at Mall of the Emirates! About time
Well, the AED1 billion refurbishment of the mall, which is unveiled this week, does indeed include 1,300 additional parking spaces to take the total capacity to 7,200, but that’s not what the building work has been all about.

Yeah, we have a massive new Marks & Spencers
Old news. What we have now is a whole new floor, an 18-month project that has been dubbed Evolution 2015 by mall owners, Majid Al-Futtaim. It has added a whole new floor on the Carrefoure side of the building that will increase the retail space in the facility by 23,000 square metres.

That explains the blocked stairways. What new retail goodies can we expect?
Before opening, mall owners were pretty tight-lipped. But now that all has been revealed we know that fashion chains Abercrombie & Fitch, Jane Norman and All Saints are here, as are Burberry, Armani and D&G for children. There are also up-and-coming brands Seafolly from Australia and, from Canada, Lululemon.

The last one rings a bell.
It would if you read certain magazines. Kim Kardashian, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston have all, what’s the phrase, “stepped out” in it. An “it” brand right now, that’s for sure.

Is it just shops?
Not at all. Perhaps the most exciting development is the new Vox cinema, which is moving from its slightly awkward corner by the food court to an incredible new space that will include a 4DX cinema, a special kids’ cinema and a new gourmet dining concept by Gary Rhodes (read our interview with the chef in the current issue of ShortList). The new VOX is the biggest cinema in the Middle East.

Great news.
It is. And rest assured it’s not just parking that’s improved. An extra 40 taxis cab be housed at Welcome Court 4. So you make a quick getaway when your feet start screaming for mercy.
