COLLECTION: Kage SS16

When it comes to local fashion talent, the women behind Kage are always on the list. Arwa Abdelhadi and Basma Abu Ghazaleh put together their first capsule collection on a trip to the UK, inspire by the East London’s textiles. It speaks volumes that, in 2009, the inaugural collection sold out quickly, showcasing their talent for designing flattering yet edgy pieces.

Now based in Dubai Design District, Kage continues to bring fun, floaty fabrics to the region and beyond, and the SS16 collection is no different. Here, Basma talks us through her inspiration and key pieces.

What’s the inspiration behind the new collection?
The fabrics inspired my designs for SS16.  The prints especially created a refreshing and androgynous flare with a fresh twist. The colourful palette as well as the fabric textures influenced the perfect summer designs.

Is there a celebrity or type of woman you had in mind while doing your initial sketches?
The Kage woman is always in mind. She is carefree and young at heart but also independent and never takes fashion too seriously.

If you had to pick one standout piece, what would it be?
The pieces are all created so that they can be easily mixed and matched with each other, so depending on how they are styled, they each stand out differently.  I would say the metallic stripe pieces are probably my favourite, not to forget the bomber jacket!
