Dubai-based Ethiopian designer Feiruza Mudessir grabbed our attention with the launch of her label Finchitua, which in Ethiopian means, “the girl with a gap between her teeth”.

Born in Ethiopia, Feiruza got her first taste of design when experimenting with wicker and dried flowers, which she decorated with coloured paints. She now blends traditional Ethiopian fabrics with modern style influences and interpretations from cultures she was exposed to growing up: India, Dubai and Egypt especially.

“This gives my pieces a fresh twist that’s easy to wear and perfectly tailored to ladies who love to dress up.” Although, there’s a feminine streak here, with Habesha fabrics, clever tribal detailing and an imaginative use of lace and asymmetrical cuts, men will appreciate her unique t-shirts.

“Fashion shouldn’t be just about the label you’re wearing but also how you feel when you are wearing it. In my creations you can almost hear the rhythms of Africa, the beats of India and the vibrancy of Dubai.”

Available from Urbanist store in BoxPark, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE’s boutique and direct from the designer via @finchitua.
