Golf in Dubai: The Track at Meydan Golf
Golf can certainly be intimidating for those of us who lack confidence in our ability, especially when facing the prospect of playing some of the UAE’s highest-profile courses. Plenty of clubs claim to be welcoming towards players of all abilities, but this is not always the case (as you will soon find out if you keep a group waiting with slow play on one of the larger courses). The Track, a Peter Harradine-designed floodlit nine-hole pay-and-play course next to the Meydan racecourse, lives up to this claim with an unpretentious atmosphere, patient staff and holes with varying degrees of difficulty. And the prerequisite amazing views of the Dubai skyline, of course. Its opening in 2012 brought something to the country’s golfing scene that it really didn’t have and it is now rightly thought of among the region’s top nine-hole courses.
A nine-hole course with the feel of 18 - with enough variation in its holes that if you book a full round, your second time around won’t feel like deja vu. The par-36 course is 3,706 yards - or, for the mathematically challenged, 7,412 yards over 18 holes off black championship tees. The course has five tee box options on each hole to ensure a variation in difficulty and comprises two lengthy par-5s, five temptingly drivable par-4s and two tricky but fun par-3s, with six natural lakes that bring water into play on every hole. It is the ideal spot to sharpen the rough edges on your game, enjoy a pressure-free round with friends or even get serious with a loser-buys-dinner challenge against your biggest
Facilities and activities
The Track has a floodlit driving range and practice area, plus The Academy, where PGA-qualified instructors will get to work on reshaping your swing. Of course, Meydan boasts a huge range of other activities, including the racecourse itself, while the nearby Meydan One mall development, set for launch early next year, will include the largest dancing fountain in the world, a 1km ski slope, beach and hundreds of retail outlets.
The 19th and beyond
The Qube Sports Bar, a high-end take on the type of dive in which you usually watch the match, is named for the glimmering cube-shaped screen in the centre of the bar, with four huge surfaces making sure every sports fan gets a great view of the action. It also has darts, pool tables and a menu full of pub favourites. The Track Restaurant is a casual dining spot with a more relaxed atmosphere, while The Kiosk, next to the driving range, serves snacks while laid-back music plays in the background.
