Atletico Madrid snap up Joao Felix
Atletico Madrid have signed forward Joao Felix from Benfica in what is the fifth most expensive football transfer in history.
The 19-year-old, who cost the Spanish side over AED520 million, has signed a seven-year contract with the La Liga club.
Felix is one of the hottest properties in football and scored 15 goals for Benfica last season as they won the Portuguese title.
Thought to be the most exciting Portuguese talent since Cristiano Ronaldo, Felix recently made his debut for the national side in a UEFA Nations League game.
Last season he became the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Europa League after netting three times against Eintracht Frankfurt, and there is no doubt Atletico have acquired a hugely talented prospect.
From a financial point of view, his arrival was in part facilitated by the departure of Rodri, with Atletico announcing yesterday the midfielder was heading to Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side are expected to pay close to AED300 million, a club record fee, for the Spaniard.
Elsewhere in the football world, Peru beat Chile 3-0 in the Copa America semi-final to set up a showdown with Brazil on Monday, and the Netherlands will face USA in the final of the Women’s World Cup following a 1-0 victory over Sweden.
